Invasive Species

Landscapers from every island in Hawaii are concerned about the threat posed to our environment by invasive species. Because invasive plants can sometimes be sold by our industry and planted by the public in their gardens, the landscape industry feels a responsibility to take a proactive role in the education of the public. It is also hoped that through self regulation of our industry we can assure that our practices minimize the dangers of invasive species.

Any regulation, however, that seeks to control businesses can be perceived as onerous and may be met with resistance. Therefore, LICH seeks to facilitate the much needed discussions on how we as nurseries, architects, contractors and gardeners, can take a responsible and active role in protecting the environment from invasive species. The LICH board hopes that the web page will be visited often and used for the purpose of arriving at a consensus about a code of conduct and other aspects of this important issue which can then be supported by the majority of the landscape industry.
